"Live
to teach"

"Live to Teach" is a unique collection of teacher stories about the war, recounting their daily heroics on the educational front, their boundless care for the new generation of Ukrainian children, and their unshakeable belief in common sense to overcome cruelty and ignorance.

"Live
to teach"

The first year of the full-scale russian invasion has left hundreds of schools destroyed by shelling, thousands of cities and villages occupied by the representatives of the ‘russian world,’ and millions of traumatized children who experienced the sounds of explosions. Despite facing such extreme circumstances, Ukrainian education has remained steadfast and emerged stronger, all thanks to the selfless dedication of Ukrainian teachers who continued to teach under perilous conditions, often risking their lives in the process.

THE COLLECTION TELLS 80 STORIES OF TEACHERS

who lived through the different experiences of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. The title "Live to Teach" serves as a powerful symbol of the unwavering commitment of teachers to advance Ukrainian education, even amidst the extreme conditions of war and total uncertainty.

The collection consists of six sections:

01

The section brings together the stories of teachers from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts who lost their homes to Russian aggression twice: both in 2014 and 2022.

02

A section about teachers who have taught or continue to teach under shelling, risking their lives every day.

03

The section depicts the experience of teachers who suspended work in their schools to defend Ukraine at the front.

04

This section contains the stories of teachers whose towns or villages came under Russian occupation.

05

The section represents the experiences of teachers who were forced to go abroad.

06

The chapter concludes with the stories of teachers who, from the very first days of the war, joined the volunteer movement within their communities or even the whole country.

"LIVE TO TEACH" CAPTURES THE HISTORIC STRUGGLE OF UKRAINIAN EDUCATION FOR SURVIVAL AND TELLS THE STORY OF PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR LIGHT TO OVERCOME DARKNESS WITH THEIR DAILY EFFORTS.
For five months, a team of 15 people worked on the collection, united by their love of education and their desire to tell the world about outstanding Ukrainian teachers. Each finished text is the product of the hard work of the editor-in-chief, literary editor, text advisor, team of translators, and interviewers. Each printed or electronic page is the merit of the graphic designer and project coordinators.
The stories collected in the book are true and unique. Some of them were acquired through a story competition hosted by the Global Teacher Prize Ukraine. The rest were recorded during interviews with teachers who were featured in Ukrainian and foreign media.
